2011, a great year for games?

2011 has been around for 16 days now and no big games have hit yet, however there will be tonnes of them soon. We’re expecting to see new hardware like the PSP2, 3DS and PSPhone but mostly this year will dominate software wise.

The Playstation 3 easily has the best line-up with games  with a huge plethora of games like: inFAMOUS 2, Uncharted 3, Littlebigplanet 2, SOCOM 4, Resistance 3 and Killzone 3. But there are lots of big multiplatform titles too. While the Xbox 360 only has: Forza Motorsport 4 and Gears of War 3 (not including Kinect games).

The main reason why I’m posting this is more of a rant than a celebration.  Upon looking at the games coming out this year I noticed that there are two categories of games. 1. Sequels 2. Shooters, all games this year go into one of those categories (apart from L.A. Noire) in an industry where creativity is celebrated, are we seeing too much of the same now?

Due to the success of games like: Black Ops, Halo: Reach etc the market trend we now see in the industry is for first person shooters. Here’s a list of all the shooters coming out this year (get ready)

  • Killzone 3
  • Bulletstorm
  • Deus Ex Human Revolution
  • Homefront
  • Brink
  • Portal 2
  • RAGE
  • Resistance 3
  • Crysis 2
  • I am Alive

There probably are less than you expected, but the main factor is, is that these games are huge games with lots of money backed into them and being published by the main publishers. These games don’t look; from what I’ve seen, like they’re going to innovate (apart from Brink, that looks cool). I don’t see many games this year that will innovate gameplay wise. The biggest problem is, is that people will still buy these games; I’m not saying that we should boycott them, but if people keep buying these games then all we’ll see is first person shooters or sequels on the market and personally I don’t want to see that.
